Do you really need to learn how to read guitar music notation? Aren't guitar tabs enough for you to learn? Read on to find out.
Advantages of reading guitar music notation
If you know how to read guitar music notation, you can easily play any music even without hearing them before. The notation will be your guide to the pitch and length of the notes. Other symbols that also serve as descriptions will tell you how to play according to the composition. Another benefit is that you can also play music even if the sheets are are written for a different instrument. The notation guides you to which notes to play. Knowledge in notation will also guide you to composing music for other instruments and arranging musical scores. It is a requirement for composers to learn about notation so they can create their own music sheet and share their compositions to others.
Using guitar tablature
By using guitar tablature, even students can start playing other melodies using the entire fretboard as a guide. It is also easier to learn the chords and riffs. Also, tablature notation proves to be easier to read and understand despite alternative tunings, with the tab notation to guide you where to place your fingers. The Internet has tons guitar tablature renditions that you can easily access and use for your practice and training.
Though guitar tablature may be easy to use, it's still best to learn how to read sheet music notation. This is especially true if you have plans of composing or arranging music. Start by naming different notes, and you're on your way to learning more about sheet music notation.

Some argue that alternate picking is a better technique than directional picking. In fact, guitar idols like John Petrucci and Paul Gilbert are known to use alternate picking with great success. However, alternate picking requires more movements, which may at times cause discomfort, muscle strain, and injury. Let's take a closer look at directional picking to uncover its many benefits.
Directional picking vs. alternate picking
Some people claim that directional picking is simply not as powerful as alternate picking-- that it often distorts rhythm and affects precision. However, distortion in rhythm and precision is often a result of lack of training. Guitar legends like Mike Walsh and George Bellas are known for using directional picking without losing precision and rhythmic control. It can be tricky at first, but with practice, some might find directional picking to be more efficient, as it lets you achieve greater speed. The key to this is stabilizing the forearm muscles with special training so you can gain better control.
Benefits of directional picking
With proper training and the right approach, directional picking can let you achieve better results in playing. The movements are minimized with this technique since the straight line approach is used. You go directly to the next string you're supposed to play, as opposed to following the predetermined picking patterns with alternate picking. With minimized movements required when picking, you can achieve greater speed, better flow and accuracy in time. Another benefit of directional pocking is that it minimizes muscle strain.
Though directional picking can help you play better and develop better techniques, it takes time to learn everything and master the art.

Even when it comes to using our hands, we tend to have our personal favorite. I wonder why we always use the right hand in writing, cooking or handling! While the other left receives less of the attention he needed. But just to be fair, we must develop the same impulse and strength on both hands. For instance, in playing the guitar, the perfect notes and tunes rely heavily on your beautiful left hand execution. It also suffers a great deal in putting up with pressure on chords while retaining the varied finger positions on strings. Just as a boxing champ can strike a knock-out with a power left punch, flexibility and accuracy should also intensify your left hand technique.

There are different shapes and chords and each should be treated with unique specialty. Sometimes you'll need a firmer grip but most of the time, a gentle touch may do the trick. A good guitar player knows exactly how to work with both hands in seamless coordination but a more challenging task is to master the left hand technique. You do not need to employ too much pressure or strength, just relax and make your fingers at ease with the chords and strings. Flexibitlity and accuracy is best achieved once you learn to distinguish the different muscle strengths and contractions you'll need to impose on your left hand. There are various tips to relax a left hand touch. This routine will improve you guitar playing in no time.

Step 1, place your left hand on 5th position: the first finger on the 5th fret, second on the 6th fret, third on the 7th fret, and the pinky on th 8th fret. Next, just touch the strings and release the pressure. Then, elevate all your fingers except for the first and you're now ready to pluck the B string. You're not supposed to hear a note, just a muted pluck so continue plucking and slowly place your first finger down and soon you'll hear a clear note. Repeat the cycle but this time, use your second, then third and the fourth finger. To get the fret buzz, back off all the presssure from your fingers.

The iPod music craze is now dominating the music market. An iPod can store thousands of songs. That is, in spite of its miniature size.
Most of these songs are either downloaded for free from the internet or shared though peer-to-peer systems. To some extent, this is beneficial to music listeners because of the convenience that iPods provide. On the other hand, record companies suffer some losses because of free music sharing. Nonetheless, free music sharing also serve as free advertisement for record artists.
Modern gadgets such as iPods have not totally replaced live music. Modern gadgets simply serve as tools for enhancing people interest in music. Modern gadgets have not replaced traditional musical instruments such as guitars. Playing guitar is still more popular than iPods among teenagers. One concept in guitar playing is music interval. An interval is the unit of measuring music progression. It is comparable to the units of lengths such as inches or centimeters. The Major scale defines intervals. Playing distinctive guitar melodies require proper understanding of intervals. An interval is the duration between musical notes. The reference note in a standard guitar or keyboard is C major. Intervals are designated by numbers.

There are many popular songs that are available in digital music format. Nonetheless, I have not yet found any digital instructional audio or video regarding guitar playing. I guess I am just not looking in the right places. Although downloading digital music is free, I still prefer buying CDs, especially when it comes to my favorite songs. I even collect cassette and turn-table versions of my favorite old music. The sound might be scratchy, but it has authenticity in it.
When it comes to playing musical instruments, I prefer the guitar. It has authenticity in it. The guitar has a distinctive sound quality that is absent in many string instruments. The sound quality of an acoustic guitar is dependent on the sound resonance. Hence, the type of wood used as sound board of the guitar determines the sound output.
Every type of wood has a sonic signature. Mahogany when used as a top side, for instance, has the ability to slow the velocity of sound because of its density. This produces a low overtone. Mahogany resonance is ideal for the upper end of the tone dynamic range. It produces sound better than any MP3 version.

Artistic guitar playing may require some talent, but learning the basics of guitar playing may only take some patience and lots of practice. However, if you are busy in other activities such as work or study, it may require careful multitasking skills to optimize your time. Practicing playing the guitar may only require about half an hour each day. Nonetheless, you should set your mood. You cannot effectively learn playing the guitar if your mind is wandering elsewhere. Although it helps to hire a guitar instructor, you will save money if you study guitar on your own.
One of the basic skills in guitar playing is note and chord transposition. Transposition simply means the conversion of a chord or note into a higher or lower scale. Transposition is usually done if a guitar player desires to make play a song at a higher or lower pitch. Chord transposition is done for the whole series of chords.
A simple method of chord transposition is simply moving your finger position one fret or several fret higher. Transposition can improve the quality of sound of a song. Now, you can impress date partners with your chord skills.

Playing musical instruments and live musical performances are still popular among the youth even with the advent of downloadable internet music. Digital Apple iPods and MP3s have not replaced traditional musical instruments such as the guitar and piano. Some young people are still interested in learning how to play musical instruments instead of simply downloading music from the internet.
Guitar chords can be classified as major, minor, dominant, or augmented. The chord sound varies as it shifts from major to minor or from dominant to augmented chord. For example, the sound of a major chord is joyful. On the other hand, the sound of a minor chord stays gloomy. You will observe this pattern in some of the popular folk songs. The easiest guitar chord to play is E minor. Playing this chord will only need two fingers. You simply need to place your index finger on the second fret of the fifth string and simultaneously press your middle finger against the second fret of the fourth string. Strum the string and listen carefully. Now, play the E major version. Have you noticed any difference in the sound?

With a guitar in one hand and a beautiful rose bouquet in the other, you are set for a romantic date. However, do not be too self-assured. You may still need some practice plucking the guitar string. You might end up disappointing your date if you are unable to correctly play a song. Guitar playing is ideal for a picnic date. You might need to gather some courage to serenade your date.
You might need some reviews on basic guitar playing. Do you still remember arpeggio? No, arpeggio is not a name of an Italian, although the word is derived from the Italian language. The literally mean “to play like a harp.” In guitar playing, arpeggio techniques are applied to create distinctive melody. This will require playing the notes of a chord quickly in succession of from lowest pitch to the highest pitch.
Playing notes in this manner will create a well-defined tune. Playing chord notes simultaneously sometimes may sound boring to the listener. Arpeggio techniques add some variety to your guitar playing. There are certain chord forms that are appropriate for arpeggio. These chords are classified into three groups, namely, dominant, major, and minor.

Learning how to competently play the guitar is relatively easier than learning the tricks of gourmet food preparation. Guitar playing does not require meticulous measurement and proper mixing of ingredients. You do not need to spend effort going to the supermarket looking for exotic and expensive ingredients. You can save money better in learning how to play the guitar than learning how to cook.
Learning the guitar covers four basic subjects, namely scales, chords, arpeggios, and approaches. If you become thoroughly familiar with the concepts under these subjects, you can maximize the versatility of the guitar as a musical instrument. You will not only learn how to play, but you will also learn how to write songs using the guitar. The guitar is played based on progressive musical scales.
The musical notes in the guitar fret board are permanent in their relative positions. You might need to memorize them. However, the note sequence repeats every twelfth fret. Playing the scales can become boring. This problem is solved using approaches. Like sport games, approaches give style and dexterity to the guitar player. Approaches in note playing simply refer to the use of all the strings instead of one string.

The guitar and the distinctive music it produces are closely associated with Spain similar to how people associate violent bullfighting festivals. The guitar was invented in Spain at around the 15th. The first guitar only had four strings. This eventually became the basis for the invention of the ukulele. The guitar never enjoyed wide acclaim or respect during the Renaissance period in the European continent. Europeans considered the guitar as a not-very-serious or unsophisticated musical instrument.
However, today the guitar is now the most popular tool for a music piece. Its two main advantages of the guitar over other musical instruments is its portability and simplicity. The basic skills you need to learn in order for you to play the guitar are guitar chord positions and right timing or rhythm.
Even if you memorized all the chord positions, you may still not be able to play a song if you do not know the right timing. The names of guitar chords are designated with the seven letters of the alphabet. Every letter corresponds to the major notes, namely, C, D. E, F, G, A, and B.

Music is an essential part of a romantic dating ritual. Soft music, in particular, relaxes the mind and enhances intimacy. Eating gourmet meal accompanied by soft music can aid proper digestion. Soft music sets good mood. A romantic date is never complete without the accompaniment of music.
You do not need to be a musically inclined person to learn how to play music and impress your love one. The easiest musical instrument to play is the guitar. Playing guitar simply requires the familiarization of some basic guitar chords. Chords are essentially three of more notes derived from the Major scale. The Major scale does not include sharp and flat notes. The notes of a chord can be derived from the first or second octave of the Major scale. For instance, C major chord is comprised of the C, E, and G notes of the first octave. The formula for creating chords is basically applicable all throughout the scale progression. There are only 21 basic chords that a beginner needs to learn to play the guitar. A good command of these few chords will enable a beginner to play literally thousands of popular songs.

Songs will never be songs without that guitar melody. A band will never sound like one without a guitar accompaniment. Let's face it, the strum of guitar adds soul to music. There are so many kinds of guitars, and guitar music is so versatile. It can be for acoustic, for rock and roll, for jazz, for classical music, and even for reggae. The bass guitar is my favorite guitar, it just gives so much emphasis on the depth of the song.
All I'm saying is that guitars are like the human soul. The human body is just physical attributes, it will always be hollow without the soul and the passion. Guitars are the soul and passion of music. Without the strum of the guitar music seems useless. Am I being too harsh on the other instruments? Well, I know you all agree with me when I say that the guitar is essential in any form of music or song. The guitar itself can provide a relaxed mode of musical entertainment; even without the vocals. In traditional love serenades, what instrument do guys use? The guitar! Generally in song introductions the guitar is always played first. So I say strum that guitar and play some funky music!

Guitars are by far the most popular musical instruments in the world. They are preferred mainly for their versatility and portability. The piano might be a lovelier instrument for the ear, but there's no way a freshman is going to bring a piano with him to college.
Also, compared to the flute, guitars are very easy to play. Chords can be mastered in days even by a beginner. And learning the basics will open your horizon to better things in music. Bassoons, in contrast, are very limiting instruments.
There's nothing like writing a song with a guitar. Harmonicas are ideal for Blue Grass, but if you happen to have an eclectic taste in music, guitar is the instrument of choice.
Lastly, guitar shapes are an instant draw for male musicians. The perfect breast, waist and hip measurement can inspire one to virtuoso song-writing like no instrument, unless it's a mermaid, could.

Electric is for born performers. The young Mick Jaggers and Steven Tylers of the hip-hop generation will surely ask for an electric guitar for his next birthday. But for the more sensitive blooming guitarists, an acoustic instrument is definitely the smarter choice. Looking on to the future, an acoustic guitar can do wonders to a sensitive soul and vice versa. It's great to be a performer and be adored by thousands, but not every parent would want his little musical talent to grow up among groupies.
Whether it's a Seagul or a Yamaha, often the first consideration when buying that gift guitar is the price. This may be a mistake. A more important factor when purchasing a gift is functionality. Will this gift be used? An even better question is: Will it be treasured. The sensibilities of one's child should be on top of every other consideration. Buying a young poet a Telecaster might just leave your own Lisa Loeb no choice...

Improvisation is one of the most essential guitar theories often neglected by most musicians. Pop music is a cookie-cutter succession of predictable melodies that many bohemian-types and radicals consider nauseating. For a real guitarist to succeed in his craft, he must be able to diverge from the usual path of music-making and lyric-scribing.
Expert musicians agree that when it comes to guitar improvisation the key is to listen, incorporate and expand to as wide a musical horizon as possible. That would mean submerging oneself in a bizarre collection of sounds, which an audience will find difficult to accept at first. Experimentation, however, would make any guitar rendition more exciting. This enables you to shatter common audience perception, breaking new grounds for musical artistry.

It's every guitarist's dream to make it big and be recognized for their talent. But becoming recognized is a difficult thing to do, requiring talent, hard work and a bit of luck. A way of becoming recognized is in playing and writing your own material. Easy, you say? Not so.
The main challenge in writing your own material comes from the demand for original material. You have to write your own brand of original music, not a sound or lyric that sounds like someone else's. Rip-offs are generally not well received.
Another challenge in writing your own music is how to make it last. By this I mean how top make a song stick in the minds and hearts of the people who listen to it. It can be a stirring melody, a graphic lyric or a combination of both that will make a song memorable.
So if you ever do decide to try your hand at writing your own songs or music, be sure to be original and memorable.
